Artistic Outputs – Indonesia

In Indonesia, MAP aims to influence national curricula and youth policies from the grassroots level. This bottom-up approach involves working with local civil society organisations (CSOs), national NGOs and cultural practitioners to engage with local communities and national policy makers, including the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection and the Ministry of Education.

From 2020 to 2021, MAP co-investigator Dr Harla Sara Octarra and the team from Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia conducted baseline activities to identify young participants and stakeholders in Jakarta. This was followed by a series of training sessions for trainers and facilitators, and activities with young participants exploring different art forms for peacebuilding, such as photovoice, digital collage, music, theatre and film, facilitated by Indonesian cultural artists. In 2022, two youth-led Small Grant research projects were conducted using film and comics. This was followed by two Medium Grant projects in 2023-2024: ‘Beyond Tradition‘, which innovatively uses Lenong, the traditional theatre of the Betawi people, as a dialogue tool for peacebuilding; and ‘GENPEACE‘, which focuses on amplifying youth voices and children’s civic participation through the creation of song and performance.
